Sun Belt Media Days '17

Monday was a big day for the Eagles in New Orleans. RB Wesley Fields and LB Chris DeLaRosa joined Head Coach Tyson Summers to meet the media at Sun Belt Media Days 2017 at the Superdome. Coach Summers answered questions from media all over the Sun Belt, as well as the "Voice of the Eagles" Danny Reed. There were some interesting tidbits from Summers' press conference, but the meaty part is the interview above. Here's what we learned:

  • Spoke highly of the three new offensive coaches: OC Bryan Cook, OL Coach Bob Bodine, and WR Coach Juston Wood. All three have previous coordinator experience. They know that Statesboro is a special place and understand the expectations. "You're expected to win at Georgia Southern."
  • Said he wants the offense to be physical, and the Offensive Line to get downhill. He's looking for more explosive plays. We return four starters on the offensive line and Tommy Boynton comes back from a year off. Summers said the OL had the best summer of any unit. RB Wes Fields, RB LA Ramsby, and SB/Z Myles Campbell were mentioned by name as being key players in our offense. Waiting to see who the X and Y receivers will be but said it is a talented.
  • Praised new Strength & Conditioning Coach Dwayne Chandler. Mentioned that they are in better shape 'than they've ever been.' Mentioned DT Darius Sapp and OG Curtis Rainey by name as 'barely recognizable.' Being more careful with practice. Keeping guys off the ground to cut back on injuries. Wants to be physical because to the nature of the offense but wants guys to be smart.
  • Spoke briefly about the QB battle. Had a funny story about Shai Werts getting locked out of the Ted Smith Center last year and having to climb the fence. But also mentioned that Werts had put in the work in the offseason. First one in the facility, last one out. LeBaron has the most experience and he's taking a wait-and-see approach with newcomers Juco transfer Kado Brown and Jaalon Frazier.
  • The Secondary will be the strength of the defense, opposite from last Fall. Front 7 is young but Darius Sapp, Logan Hunt, and Chris DeLaRosa are key pieces that are returning. Mentioned DE Traver Vliem, DE Deshon Cooper, LB Rashad Byrd, and LB Todd Bradley as having good Springs.

The first day of practice is tomorrow July 25 at 9:45 AM. Here is the Practice Schedule. Here are the interviews of Tyson Summers, Chris DeLaRosa, and Wes Fields:
